Wine appreciation, just like appreciating any art, requires experience to develop.  Only after tasting many wines and analyzing them, can you begin to see/taste the subtleties; both in good and bad wines.  With experience one can start to distinguish a good wine from a bad one, and a good wine from a truly great one. There is really no right or wrong way to taste wine.  It’s this simple – Do you like it or not?

That said, there is a “formal” way to taste wine that reveals more about the wine that is in your glass, even before you start to drink it.  Knowing how to taste wine in this manner is crucial to developing the skills required for wine appreciation. By focusing on important aspects you will help to refine your palate, pick out subtle details and really appreciate your wine.  Paying attention to each of the components of a wine really brings out more complexity and subtlety from the tasting experience.  This helps take the experience from simple consumption of a beverage to new heights of appreciation.
