There are many ways into the creation of abstract art, and no single way is definitive. One way is to begin by creating a fairly traditional representational or impressionistic sketch of a subject and using this as the basis for your abstraction. In this approach, the artist’s own imagination and perception are key to discerning the form, structure and colors needed to communicate their own distinctive vision. In this case the artist is not working from a blank slate, but from their own basic landscape. This workshop will focus on this practical approach, inviting participants to move again and again from their depictions of various landscapes to abstraction. Along the way participants also will learn how abstract art developed in the first place and how virtually every movement of art has valued the idea that artistic vision begins where our assumptions break down in the face of reality.
